The Pen in the Registry Office

This message is for the woman holding the registrar's pen over a vow, nine months a believer, whose father, grandmother and mother each made promises to people and to God and kept none of them

The registrar's pen is heavier than it looks. It is one of those brass ones on a chain, so nobody walks off with it, and it has been in a lot of hands. She is holding it over the line where her name goes and the room has gone quiet in the way rooms do when everybody is waiting for a small sound.

There are eleven people in the room, and a plastic fern, and a clock she is not looking at. Her husband of forty seconds is beside her. Her mother is in the second row in a hat she borrowed. And what she is thinking, with the nib an inch from the paper, is not about him at all. She is thinking about her father, who made this same promise three times to three different women in three different rooms and walked out of every one of them, and about her grandmother, who made it twice, and about her mother, who went forward at a tent meeting the summer she was nineteen and gave her life to Jesus and was back to how she had been by Christmas.

Nobody in her family kept anything they promised. Not to each other. Not to God. That is not an accusation, and she is not making one. It is a fact she has lived inside like weather, and she has never once heard anyone in her line say a vow and then still be there ten years later on the strength of it. And she has been baptized for nine months. Nine months. She has said things to God in that time that she meant with her whole chest, and the pen is an inch from the paper and the question that is stopping her hand is not do I love him. It is what am I made of.

You are the one holding that pen. Maybe it is not a wedding for you. Maybe it is a Bible open on a bus, or the third week of turning up somewhere, or a promise you made to God in a car park with your forehead on the steering wheel. But you came into covenant with Him and then you looked behind you for anybody, one person, who kept a promise, and there is nobody. And you are quietly certain that a covenant is only as strong as the person standing in it, and in your family that has never been very strong at all.

The Pen in the Registry Office

Whose keeping it rests on

Here is the first thing, and it changes the weight of the pen. A covenant in Scripture is not a deal between two parties who each hold up an end. It is an oath. And the covenant you are standing in was sworn by God, and it was sworn by God to Himself, because there was nobody greater to swear by. The letter to the Hebrews says exactly that: when God made His promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater by whom to swear, He swore by Himself, and He did it so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement (Hebrews 6:13, 17 to 18).

Read whose name is on that. His. The oath is His, the swearing is His, and the keeping is His. Your family's record of vows is a real record and it is a sad one, and it is a record of what people did. It has nothing to say about what God does, because His covenant never rested on their consistency, and it does not rest on yours. It rests on Him, and His Spirit is the one who keeps it alive in a person.

So hear this, and hear it as already true and not as a hope: you are standing in a covenant that God swore, and He is the one keeping it, right now, with you inside it. I am not putting my own thought over you. That is Hebrews, and it is written down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written oath and makes it a floor under a person's feet. Your standing does not depend on your line. It never did.

The promise that reaches past you

Now the specific promise, chapter and verse, because this site does not deal in a vague sense of being covered. Isaiah wrote it down as the words of God Himself:

As for me, this is my covenant with them, says the LORD: My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children's offspring, says the LORD, from this time forth and forevermore.Isaiah 59:21

Look at the direction of that. It does not look backward for a qualifying ancestor. It starts with the person it is spoken to, and it goes forward: you, your children, your children's children, from this time forth. It is a covenant that begins at the person standing in it and reaches past them.

You have His Spirit upon you and His words in your mouth, and that is His covenant with you, not a wish you are holding. It is Isaiah 59, and it is the Spirit named inside the very promise, so the anchor is in the text itself. Notice what it does not say. It does not say from your grandfather onward. It says from this time forth. This is the covenant for the person with nobody behind them, because it was written to start where they stand.

A woman with no line behind her

And here is a thing that actually happened, because a promise on its own is a good sentence and a promise held up by a record is a floor. Her name was Ruth, and she was from Moab. There was no covenant in her line at all. Moab was outside it. Her mother-in-law's family had left Bethlehem, which means house of bread, and gone to Moab in a famine, and the men had died there, and everything about that story reads like a line that had wandered a long way from what it was promised.

And Ruth stood on a road and said to a bitter old widow: where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God (Ruth 1:16). No precedent. No father who had said it before her. She stood in it first.

Then read the last four verses of that little book. She married Boaz, and she had a son, and the women of Bethlehem named him Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David (Ruth 4:17). And when Matthew opens his gospel with the family line of Jesus, there she is, by name, a Moabite with nothing behind her, in the line of the Messiah (Matthew 1:5). What she stood in reached past her, exactly the way Isaiah said. That is not a parable. That is the record.

You are in that same covenant, by that same God, and you were placed in it first the way Ruth was, and what you stand in reaches past you. It is written in Ruth and it is written in Matthew, and it is the promised Spirit, His Spirit upon you, who makes a record from another century into a floor under your feet today. Nobody in Ruth's line kept anything. God kept everything. He still does.

The breakthrough

So here is what has actually happened while you were reading. The pen was heavy because you thought the covenant was resting on you and your line, and you know exactly what your line does with a promise. It is not resting there. It is resting on an oath God swore by Himself, and it has been made specific to you in Isaiah 59, and it has been shown to work in Ruth, and it goes forward from where you stand and not backward from where you came.

You are the one standing in it, and that is finished and true right now, and the covenant is not waiting for you to prove your stock. The word says from this time forth, and His Spirit is the one carrying it, and His Spirit is on you. Notice, too, that nothing here has put your family on trial. Your father is your father and your grandmother is your grandmother, and nobody in this article prosecutes them. What was absent is named as absence, nothing worse. What God gave is put in its place. Whether the road ahead of you holds one child or none, whether the person you name is near or far, however He answers, that is His to decide. What is yours to do is name yourself as the one standing here.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak these, out loud, with the pen down. You are in Christ, and this covenant is His to keep, so you are not signing something on your own strength, and whatever He does with the years past this room is His to decide. Scripture is the floor under every line, and the Holy Spirit and not the sound of your voice is what makes them land. The mountain in this room is the certainty that you are cut from the same cloth as everyone behind you and that a promise from you is a thing you say on the way out. Speak to it. Then speak to Him.

  1. Family record of vows made and let go, you are the story of what people did, and you are not the story of what God does. This covenant began with His oath and not with anyone's signature, and Scripture says He swore it by Himself because there was nobody greater to swear by.
  2. Certainty that I will let go like they did, get out of this room, in the name of Jesus. The covenant does not rest on my consistency, it rests on the One who swore it, and His Spirit is upon me and His words are in my mouth from this time forth.
  3. Lord, You put a Moabite in the line of Jesus with no line behind her, and You have put me in this covenant first, with Your Spirit on me and the word You spoke in my mouth. I am the one standing in it, and I am naming who it stands for, and I thank You that what I stand in reaches past me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
