His Word Stands2 Corinthians 4:18

The Door That Closes at Nine

This message is for the man holding a promise about his marriage on the other side of a bedroom door that closes at nine

At about five to nine she rinses her cup, and he knows the sound of it from the front room, and he knows what comes next because it has come next for two years.

The stair light goes on. Eleven steps, the fourth one creaks and always has. A pause on the landing that he has never been able to account for. Then the bedroom door, and it does not slam, it has never once slammed, it just closes, and there is a small click as the latch takes.

He stays down. He always stays down. He puts the dishwasher on and takes the recycling out on a Tuesday and sits in the chair with the football on and the sound off, and at some point he goes up to the small room at the back where he has slept since the spring before last.

Now understand, nothing dramatic is happening in this house. Nobody has left. Nobody shouts. They talk about the car and her mother's hip and whether the lad is eating properly at university, and they are perfectly civil, and if you came for supper you would notice nothing except perhaps that they do not touch. It is not a war. It is a long quiet.

He has been praying one line over that marriage since the spring before last. Same line, most nights, on the edge of the chair with his hands together, a line he found in a hotel Bible on a job in Lincolnshire and wrote on the back of a delivery note.

And a couple of Thursdays ago, sitting there after the click, he did the arithmetic. Not on purpose. It just arrived. Something like seven hundred nights. Seven hundred nights of that line, and the light still goes on at five to nine, and the fourth step still creaks, and the latch still takes.

Here is the part that frightened him, and it was not the number.

It was that somewhere in those seven hundred nights he had stopped hearing the click as a door and started hearing it as an answer. Not a delay. An answer. As if God had been coming down the stairs every night at nine to tell him, in the plainest way available, no.

He would not say that out loud to anybody. He is not even sure he had said it to himself before that Thursday. But once he had noticed it he could not stop noticing it, and he sat in that chair with the football on mute and thought: I have been reading a latch as a verdict for two years.

You know that click. Maybe yours is a door, maybe it is a phone that rings out, or a chair at a table, or a Sunday where nothing is different from the last one. Some small repeating noise in your house has been promoted, quietly, and without a hearing, to the position of God's answer.

The Door That Closes at Nine

What Paul was actually looking at

There is a sentence of Paul's that gets used to tell people their trouble is not real, and it is one of the worst misreadings in circulation, because the man who wrote it was in more trouble than anyone reading this.

Read what surrounds it. He is hard pressed on every side. He is struck down. He says plainly that the outward man is perishing, which is not poetry, it is a description of a body being worn out by the work. He is not a man floating above his circumstances. He is a man in them up to his neck, and then he says this:

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.2 Corinthians 4:18

The word behind temporal means under time. Time has jurisdiction over it. A latch is a thing under time. A landing light is a thing under time. Seven hundred nights is a very large number of things under time stacked one on top of another, and stacking them does not move a single one of them out from under it.

Paul is not saying the seen thing is fake. He is saying it is not final, and he is saying where to put your eyes, which is a different instruction altogether from where to pretend you are.

So take this as spoken to you and not merely explained. You are looking at something real tonight, and you are not looking at a verdict, and I am not asking you to describe the door differently. 2 Corinthians 4:18 draws the line for you between the temporal and the eternal, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping you upright in a house where the evidence has been talking for two years.

What a door is entitled to say

Let me be a plain man about this, because clever men have had their turn with you.

I am not going to tell you what God is doing with that door. I do not know. I do not know why it closes at nine and I am not going to hand you a reason, or a purpose, or a lesson, because a man who tells you he has the reason for another man's closed door is selling you something and you should not buy it.

What I will tell you is what the door is entitled to say, and it is a much smaller thing than it has been saying.

That door is competent to report on tonight. That is its whole jurisdiction. It can tell you the state of a house at nine o'clock on a Thursday and it is honest about it. What it cannot do is tell you what God swore, because it was not in the room when the swearing happened and it has no access to the record. Every night for two years it has been giving evidence far outside its competence and nobody has objected.

Objection is the whole work here. Not denial. Objection.

You have not been given a covenant that a latch is allowed to overrule. Scripture calls the seen thing temporal and the unseen thing eternal, and His Spirit is inside you as the down payment on what He said, which means the thing you cannot see tonight has more standing in this house than the thing you can hear from the front room.

The order of two sentences

Now the practical part, and it is small enough to do tonight.

Most of us, when we pray about a hard thing, say the promise first and then the trouble. Lord, You said this. But the door still closes. And then we stop talking, and we go to bed standing in the second sentence, because the last thing a man says is the thing he is left holding.

Turn it round.

Name the contradiction first, out loud, honestly, with no religious sanding down of the edges. The door closes at nine and it has for two years and I sleep in the back room. Say the true thing. God is not offended by an accurate sentence and He was not going to be fooled by a tidier one.

Then say the promise after it. Out loud, in your own voice, standing in your own hallway.

Same two facts. Different order. And you finish the day standing on the second one, because that is how a room works and God made rooms.

It is not a technique for producing an outcome, and I want to be clear about that, because you have been hurt by people who promised you outcomes on a schedule. It is simply where a man chooses to be standing when he stops talking, and that is a real choice and it is yours tonight.

You are a man with an eternal thing in his hands and a temporal thing in his ears, and that is not a nice way of putting a bad situation. It is what is written, and the Spirit who wrote it through a man being worn out by the work is the one who has been holding your line steady for seven hundred nights.

The breakthrough

So here is what has moved in the last few minutes, and it is not the door.

The latch has been demoted. It goes back to being a latch. It can carry on reporting on nine o'clock, honestly, every night, and it has been stripped of the office it was never appointed to, which is telling you what God has decided about your house.

And you are still going to hear it tonight. I am not going to insult you by pretending otherwise, and I am not going to tell you what happens next, because nobody knows that and the men who say they do have done real damage to people like you. What I can tell you is that the word standing over that marriage was not issued by your circumstances, cannot be withdrawn by them, and is not up for review at nine o'clock.

You have something in your hands that is older than the quiet and outlasts it. Scripture calls it eternal in as many words, and the Spirit of God inside you is the down payment on it, and neither the record nor the down payment has changed once in seven hundred nights.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your feet. The right to speak like this was not earned by two good years or lost in two hard ones; it is yours in Christ, it was given to you, and His Spirit is the seal on it, so what follows is an ambassador reading the record and not a man working up a mood. Scripture is the record. The house is only the weather. So speak to the door first, then to the thing the door has been telling you about yourself, then to God, and whatever He does with this marriage is His to decide, in His own way and in His timing.

  1. Door that closes at nine, you are evidence about tonight and nothing more. Scripture calls what is seen temporal and what is unseen eternal, so keep reporting on this house if you must, and understand that you have no standing to sentence it, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Thought that I am only a lodger here, get out of this front room. What is written is what says who I am and His Spirit is the down payment on it, so I am a man under an oath in a quiet house, and I am done taking my name from a latch.
  3. Jesus, You are keeping what is written over this marriage and You were not consulted by the stairs. I am standing in the hallway tonight, saying the true thing first and Your word last, and going to bed on Your word. Your Holy Spirit is the one holding the line steady, and the order is not changing.
