Stones Of RemembranceHabakkuk 2:2

Every Task and Nothing He Did

This message is for the man whose phone holds every task he has ever been given and nothing God has ever done

He is only looking for a boiler service date. That is all. Half nine at night, in the chair, phone in one hand, and he opens the notes and starts scrolling.

And he keeps scrolling, because it is not there, and the scrolling goes on a good deal longer than he expected.

Skip hire, ring back Wednesday. Dave re scaffold, Monday first thing. Her mother's tablets, the blue one is the morning one. MOT. Get the lad's boots, size ten and a half now. Diesel receipt in the door pocket. Ring the surgery at eight sharp or you will not get through. Six years of shopping lists. A note that just says GATE. Another that just says ASK BARRY, and he has no idea any more who Barry is.

Nine hundred and something notes. He has never once deleted one.

He gets to the bottom, which is the top, which is a note from a February in 2017 about a hire agreement, and he sits there in the chair with his thumb still moving out of habit.

Every single thing that anybody has ever asked of him is in that phone. His wife's jobs. His mother in law's jobs. The site's jobs. The church's jobs, because he is on the rota for the van and the fire door check. Six years of a man being reliable, all of it logged, all of it retrievable, all of it there in his hand.

And there is not one line in it about God.

Not one. Not a date. Not a word. He looks for it properly then, he goes back through and actually searches, and he finds two things: a note of a Bible reference somebody mentioned once, and a partial address for a men's weekend in Shropshire that he did not go to.

He is fifty three. He has been in church since he was twenty six. He can tell you what he owed everybody in the spring of 2019. He cannot tell you one thing God did that year and put a date to it.

And what he feels, sitting there, is not exactly guilt. It is more like the feeling of finding a room in your own house you have never been in. He has kept the most careful record of what was asked of him and no record whatsoever of what was given to him, and it never once crossed his mind that a man could keep the second kind.

You have that phone. Or the drawer version, or the shoebox version, or the head version where it all just goes round. A full ledger on one side. Nothing in the other column.

Every Task and Nothing He Did

The first thing God said to a man who complained

Habakkuk had a complaint and he made it twice, out loud, and it was not a polite one. How long am I going to shout at You and get nothing. Why do You make me look at all this and then do nothing about it.

God answers him. And the first instruction in the answer is not a rebuke and it is not an explanation of the trouble. It is this:

Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.Habakkuk 2:2

Write it. Get it out of the air and onto a surface. And make it plain, which in the Hebrew is the sense of cutting it in clearly, big enough and blunt enough that a man going past at a run can take it in without slowing down.

That last part is the bit I want you to hold, because it tells you what God knows about us. He does not say make it beautiful. He does not say make it eloquent, or long, or theologically balanced. He says make it readable by somebody in a hurry, because the man who most needs to read it is not going to be sitting down.

You are the man running past, and God knew that when He said it. Right now, as you read, the instruction in Habakkuk 2:2 is aimed at you and not at a scholar with a quiet afternoon, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put that word in writing precisely so a working man could catch it at speed.

Heaven keeps one, so it is not a gimmick

If writing things down feels like a devotional craft project, look at what Malachi says God does.

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.Malachi 3:16

A book of remembrance. Written before Him. People were talking to each other about God in a hard, cynical stretch of history where it did not look like it was worth doing, and heaven wrote it down.

So the ledger is not an idea somebody had at a conference. It is an imitation of something God does. When you write one line about what He did, with a date on it, you are copying out a page from a book that already exists and already has your name in it.

And that is worth saying plainly, because a man in that chair at half nine can quietly conclude he is the only person in the world who has not been keeping score. You are already in a record you did not write and cannot lose, and I am not softening that to be kind; Scripture says the book of remembrance was written before Him, and the Spirit is the one who has kept your name in it through six years of shopping lists.

The entry that will do you the most good is the small one

Now let me say the thing that will free you, because I have watched men get this wrong and give up in a fortnight.

You do not need a story. You need an entry.

There is a way of talking about this that turns it into a competition of testimonies, where a line only counts if it would hold a room. That is not what the tables in Habakkuk are for and it is not what the book in Malachi is full of. Make it plain, God said. Plain. Three or four words and a date.

The work came from a direction nobody was watching. March.

Slept. October, the bad week.

Rang me back. I still do not know why.

Those are entries. In eleven months, when something in your life is arguing hard, those small flat lines will hold more weight than one enormous story from 2009 that you have told so often it has gone smooth as a stone in your pocket. Small and dated beats big and vague, every time, because you cannot argue with a date.

You are not behind, and you are not disqualified by having nothing dramatic to write. Scripture put a whole book of remembrance together out of people simply talking to each other about God, and the Spirit who kept that record is not grading yours by the size of the entries.

The breakthrough

So here is what has changed, and it is not that you now have a task. Heaven forbid. There are quite enough tasks on that phone already and I am not adding one.

What has changed is the column. There has only ever been one column in your record, the column of what is owed and asked and due, and you did not decide that, nobody taught you there was another one. Tonight there are two.

And the second column is not a discipline you are being measured on. It is a shelf for things that are already yours. Every entry that goes in it happened. You are not manufacturing anything, you are only stopping the leak, because Scripture told a running man to write the word down so it would still be there when he came back past, and the Spirit is the one who brings things to remembrance, and He has plenty to work with in you.

One line tonight. Not six years of catching up. One.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the phone face down. The standing to talk like this was not earned by a good record; you are in Christ, and that was given to you before you ever wrote a line, and His Spirit is the seal on it, so this is a man reading out what is already true and not a man working up a feeling. Scripture is what He swore, your dated line is what He did, and both belong to Him. So speak to the record you have kept, then to the thing that record has been telling you about yourself, then to God, and whatever He does next is His to decide, in His own way and in His timing.

  1. Nine hundred notes on a phone, you are a full account of what has been asked of me and an empty account of what has been given to me. Habakkuk 2:2 says write it and make it plain, so a second column opens tonight, and one line goes in it, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling that God only ever hands me jobs, get out of this chair. Scripture says heaven keeps a book of remembrance with my name already in it, and His Spirit has been keeping my months while I kept everybody else's, so I am a man with things to write down and I am going to write them.
  3. Lord, You have done things in my house that I never once put a date to. I am writing one down tonight, small and plain, and putting it where I will run past it again. Your Holy Spirit is the one who brings it back to me, and I am giving Him something to bring back.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
