It happens on the third song. It has happened on the third song for two years and four months, and she could tell you the week it started.
Songs one and two are fine. Better than fine. There is a moment in the second one where the room lifts and she knows it is not her doing it, and she loves that moment the way you love a person.
Then the key changes into the third, and about eleven bars in, the thing arrives. Not a tickle. A closing. Like a hand at the base of the throat, unhurried, entirely uninterested in what she wants. She swallows. She drops to the octave below, which she can usually manage. If it is a bad one she turns half away from the microphone and lets the two behind her carry it, and the guitarist catches her eye and does not say anything, because they have all been doing this for two years and four months.
She has done the things. Two appointments with an ear, nose and throat specialist, who was kind and thorough and found what he found. The exercises, twice a day. The steam. The no dairy before, the water at room temperature, the speech therapist in the annexe by the retail park who was the best of all of them. She is not neglecting it and she is not being brave about it either. She is treating it, properly, the way you treat a thing.
And here is the other half, which she says to almost nobody.
Six years ago, in an ordinary meeting in an ordinary hall, something was said over her about her voice. Not a stage prophecy with a microphone. An old woman with a walking frame, in the third row, at the end, who took her hand and said something short and specific, and it went through her like cold water. She wrote it on the back of a receipt in the car and she still has the receipt.
So she is standing in a car park on a Sunday afternoon, twenty-six months into a closing throat, holding a receipt in a purse, and somebody who loves her has said the sentence again this week, gently: perhaps God is teaching you something through this.
And that sentence lands on her like a slap, though the woman meant it beautifully, because it asks her to be grateful for the thing that is contradicting the word she was given.
She sits in the car and does not start it. And she says one thing out loud, and it is not a prayer exactly.
"You said."
And nothing changes. And the door stays shut.

What Isaiah does not say
There is a passage everybody quotes at people in your position, and almost everybody quotes it wrong, so I want us to read what is actually on the page.
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.Isaiah 55:10-11
Now look at what is not there.
It does not say when. It does not say how. It does not say the word will arrive looking like the picture in your head when the old woman took your hand. It does not say the ground will be comfortable while the thing is happening in it, and it does not say the rain will feel like anything at all.
What it says is that the word does not come back up.
Rain goes one way. That is the whole force of the image. It leaves heaven, it lands, it goes into the ground, and it does not reverse. You cannot look at a wet field and tell what is happening under it, and no farmer has ever stood at a gate in March and concluded from the mud that the rain was a mistake.
Take this as spoken over you. Right now, as you read, you are holding a word that is not lying on the floor of that car park, because Isaiah 55:11 says it does not return void, and the Holy Spirit is the One keeping it live in you, which is why you have not been able to put it down for six years even when putting it down would have been easier.
The third song is not the judge
Here is the move I want to make, and it is smaller than it sounds and it changes everything.
The throat is doing what it is doing. I am not going to explain it to you. I do not know why it started in the week it started, I do not know what it is for, and I am not going to hand you a reason dressed up as comfort, because a reason you did not ask for is just a heavier thing to carry.
What I am going to do is take it out of the judge's chair.
Because that is what has happened. Slowly, over twenty-six months, the third song has stopped being a symptom and become a verdict. It is not merely a thing that happens now; it is the answer. Every week it stands up in your chest and reads out the same finding: the word was not real, or it was real and it has been withdrawn, or it was real and it was for a version of you that no longer exists.
And it has no standing to say any of that. It is a throat. It reports on a throat.
The word came out of the mouth of God, and it is written that His word accomplishes what He pleases and prospers in the thing He sent it to, and the Spirit who carried it to you in the third row is the same Spirit who is in you now while the evidence goes the other way. You have both in your hands tonight, the promise and the locked door, and you are allowed to hold them at once. Faith is not pretending the door is open.
Both, in the same hand
I want to be plain about what I am and am not saying, because enough soft things have been handed over already.
I am not telling you the throat opens. I do not know that, and no one who tells you they do is telling you the truth. God has not put me in charge of the current, only the switch.
I am telling you that the word does not come back up. Those are different sentences and the second one is the one you can stand on tonight.
So the receipt in the purse stays in the purse. Not as a superstition and not as a grievance, but as a record. What God said is what God said. What your throat does on a Sunday is what your throat does on a Sunday. Neither one is a comment on the other, and putting them in the same hand is not confusion; it is exactly what Isaiah is doing when he talks about a wet field in the dark.
So here is the turn, and it happens without the door opening.
You are not going to walk out of this message with a resolved throat, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. You are going to walk out with the third song demoted. It is no longer the finding. It is a weekly event with no authority to interpret God, and it never had any, and it has been sitting in a chair that belongs to His word.
What is written stands over you tonight, and the Spirit is the One making it stand rather than your ability to hold it up, and that is why you are still here six years on with a receipt in your purse. That is not stubbornness. That is the word refusing to return void in a woman who keeps trying to be reasonable about it.
The evidence and the oath are both in the room. Only one of them was speaking, and it is about to be corrected, out loud, by you.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you are, out loud. Your standing to speak like this is not a good week and not a healed throat: Christ is in you, and every promise of God is yes in Him, and His Holy Spirit is the seal on it, and that was given to you and it is the ground under all three of these lines. So speak to the third song, then to the thing it has been telling you about the old woman in the third row, then to God, and whatever He does with this is His to decide, in His own way and His own timing.
- Third song, you are not the verdict on what God said. Scripture says His word does not return to Him void, in Isaiah 55:11, and His Spirit is holding that line steady in me while my throat is doing whatever it does.
- Suspicion that I made the whole word up, get out in the name of Jesus. Rain does not go back up and neither does anything that came out of God's mouth, and His Spirit has kept that promise live in me for six years when putting it down would have been easier.
- Father, You said it and You have not taken it back, and I am not asking You to explain the last twenty-six months. Your Holy Spirit keeps the word You spoke wet in ground I cannot see into, and I am naming the contradiction out loud tonight and then saying Yours after it.
