Kept His Word Everywhere But Home

The hall is full and there is a queue, and the queue is for her.

That is how it works at these things. You stand near the tea and people come along the line and take your hand in both of theirs and tell you something about him, and you say thank you, and the next one comes, and it goes on for about an hour and a half.

The woman who ran the flower rota says he came out and unblocked their drain at half past eleven on a Sunday night and would not take anything for it.

A man in his sixties says your dad sat with my mother the week she was dying, every evening, and my mother was not an easy woman.

Somebody from the golf club says he never once was late for anything in twenty years.

And then a young man, thirty maybe, awkward in a suit that is not his, who says he drove me to my exams. Every morning. Two years. My mum could not drive and there was no bus that got there for nine. Every morning, he says, and his voice goes, and he has to stop and look at the ceiling for a second.

She says thank you. She means it. All of it is true and she knows every one of those stories is true because she watched him do that kind of thing her entire childhood, out of the front door, with his coat already on.

And underneath the thank yous, quietly, in a part of her that is behaving very badly at a funeral, an inventory is running.

He never drove her anywhere.

Not once, not to a single thing. He said he would and then something came up and something always came up and the something was always somebody, and it was always somebody real and somebody who genuinely needed him, which is exactly what made it impossible to be angry about for thirty years.

Three school plays. The hospital, when she had the thing with her wrist and it was her mother who sat there. The night before her wedding, when he said he would come and talk to her and did not, because a family down the road had a crisis, and it was a real crisis, and they still send a card every Christmas.

Kept his word to every person in that parish. Every single one of them. And none of it came through the front door.

She is holding a cup of tea she has not drunk any of.

And her daughter, who is seven, and who is bored, and who has been going round and round a pillar for twenty minutes, comes and pulls at her sleeve and asks in a whisper if they can go home now.

She looks down at her.

And it lands, right there, in a hall full of people saying how reliable he was: she is at the top of a line now. There is nobody above her. And whatever it is that goes on inside a house, nobody ever handed her the pattern for it.

The inventory in the queue

Let me say two things at the start, and I want to hold both of them at once, because a page that drops either one is no use to her.

The first: I am not going to put that man on trial. Not here and not anywhere. We do not have his side, we do not know what was in him, we do not know what he was carrying or what he never got given himself, and a message that turns into a prosecution of somebody's dead father has stopped being ministry and started being something else. He is not on trial on this page.

The second: I am not going to pretend either. Three school plays is three school plays. The night before a wedding is the night before a wedding. Naming a thing accurately is not an accusation, and a woman who has spent thirty years being told, gently, by everybody, how lucky she was, needs somebody to say plainly: there was a gap, and you did not invent it, and noticing it never made you ungrateful.

Both. The gap named, and the man left alone. That is the honest place to stand and it is the only place anything good gets built from.

You are not disloyal for knowing what was missing. Scripture is full of families described exactly as they were, with nothing smoothed over and nobody condemned by the telling, and the Holy Spirit is the One who lets a person see something clearly without it curdling into bitterness.

Of whom the whole family is named

Here is where Paul goes, and he goes there on his knees.

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.Ephesians 3:14-15

Read the second half again. The whole family, in heaven and on earth, is named from Him.

Which direction does that run? Downwards. The name starts at the Father and comes down. It does not start with a man in a parish and work its way up to God, and this is the thing that has quietly gone wrong for her and for a great many people, because the word father arrived in her life fully defined before she could read, and it was defined by a man who was superb outside his own front door.

So when Scripture says Father, some part of her hears a man with his coat already on.

Paul says no. The name is His first. Every good thing the word is supposed to mean sits in Him and comes down from Him, and every human version is a copy, and some copies are close and some are faint and none of them is the original. What she experienced was one copy. It was never the definition.

Right now, as you read this, you are named from the Father downward and not from your hallway upward, exactly as Ephesians 3:15 has it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes that off a page and starts retraining what the word means in your chest.

Standing in it without a pattern

Now to the thing she felt in the hall with her daughter's hand on her sleeve.

Nobody handed her the pattern. That is true and I am not going to talk her out of it. She has no worked example of a person who is as reliable at the kitchen table as they are at somebody else's drain. She is going to have to do things she never watched anybody do.

But look at what she does have, because it is more than a gap.

She has the word, which describes it exactly. She has the Spirit, who Paul in that same prayer asks would strengthen a person in the inner man, which is precisely the room she is worried about, the inside of the house rather than the front step. And she has a naming that came down from God and did not have to travel through her father to reach her.

That is not nothing to build on. That is a foundation laid somewhere else entirely and then handed over.

And here is the part I want her to hear with her whole heart. Standing in this does not require her to say one hard word about him. Not at the graveside, not to her daughter, not ever. She is not undoing anybody. She is standing somewhere, and putting what God gave in the space where something was absent, and that is a completely different action from fighting a dead man.

You are already the one standing in it, at this hour, in a hall with a cold cup of tea, and it did not begin when you felt ready. His word says the family takes its name from the Father, and the Holy Spirit is the strengthening in the inner man that Paul asked for on his knees for exactly this.
