A New LineJeremiah 32:38-40

Never Watched One Kept

This message is for the man who does not know how to keep a promise because he never once watched one kept

The boy is nine and he is standing on the step with a football under his arm asking about Thursday.

There is a thing at school on Thursday. Not a big thing. Some sort of afternoon where the parents come and the year fours do something in the hall, and it starts at two and his boy has asked him twice already this week, which is the tell, because a child who asks twice has already worked out that the first answer was not load bearing.

And the man says, "Yeah. I'll try and be there, mate."

Then he stands on his own step and hears it.

I'll try. Should be alright. All being well. Depends what the job does. He has a whole cupboard of these and he did not know he had them until this minute, and every single one of them is a door left open at the back of the sentence so that when he does not turn up, technically, nobody was lied to.

He is thirty four. He works, he provides, he has never once walked out of anything. Nobody would call him a bad father and nobody would be wrong not to.

But he cannot say a flat sentence about Thursday.

And the reason is not complicated, though it took him years to see it, and it is not the reason people assume. It is not that promises got broken to him, exactly. It is subtler than that and it does more damage.

He grew up with a man who said he would come. Saturday mornings, bag packed, sat on the low wall at the end of the drive from about half nine. And here is the thing: that man was not wicked. He meant it every time he said it. He meant it on the phone on the Thursday and he meant it when he waved on the Sunday. He simply lived in a world where saying a thing warmly and doing it were two separate activities, and he had never been shown otherwise either.

So what our man learned, sitting on that wall, was not that people are liars. What he learned was the shape of the thing. A promise is a mood. It is a nice sentence said in a good moment and everybody quietly understands that.

He has never, in thirty four years, watched one land. Not from a father, not from a boss, not from a mate, not once in his own house growing up. Not one single promise made and then simply kept, plain, unremarked, with nobody making a speech about it.

He is being asked to do a thing he has never seen done.

That is the actual problem on that step. It is not weak character and it is not a lack of love, because he loves that boy so much it frightens him. He has no template. And a man cannot copy a shape he has never watched somebody make.

You are standing on that step. Maybe not with a football; maybe it is a wife, or a friend, or a version of yourself you have promised things to for years. Somewhere in you there is a sentence you cannot say flat.

Never Watched One Kept

A promise made with the enemy at the wall

Jeremiah is under guard in a courtyard. The Babylonian army is outside the city, the siege ramps are up, the place is weeks from going, and everybody in it knows.

And in that week, God tells him to sign for a field. Sign the deed, get the witnesses, put the papers in a jar so they last. In a country that is about to be emptied of people.

Then God says why, and it is one of the great passages, and I want you to read it slowly because of what it does with the word turn.

And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: and I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.Jeremiah 32:38-40

Count what God takes responsibility for in those three verses. He gives the heart. He gives the way. He makes the covenant. He does not turn away. He puts His own fear in their hearts so that they do not depart.

Both ends. He holds His end, and then He holds theirs as well, and He says so out loud in the same breath, and He is saying it to people whose track record at that exact moment was catastrophic and who were about to lose everything they had.

That is what a kept promise looks like, and you are watching one being kept right now as you read this. Jeremiah 32:40 is not a hopeful sentiment, it is a signed thing that has been standing over your life since before you were on that wall, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it in front of you tonight instead of leaving you to guess at the shape.

You are not being asked to invent it

Now hold those two pictures together, because this is the whole article.

A man on a step who has never watched a promise land.

And a God who, in a courtyard, with an army at the wall, says out loud: I will not turn away from them, and He then does not turn away, for two and a half thousand years and counting.

Nobody is asking you to invent the shape out of nothing. That was the impossible thing and it was never the assignment. You are being shown it. Jeremiah 32:38-40 is the shape written out in full, in a book you can go back to, by the only One who has never once left a door open at the back of a sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the reason it is open in front of you tonight instead of lost in a courtyard.

And I want to say something about the man on the drive, because I know how this kind of article usually goes, and we are not going there. I have no case to bring against your father and neither do you. He meant it when he said it. Whatever he did not have to give, somebody did not give him either, and he was working from the same empty shelf you have been working from, and a man cannot hand over what was never put in his hands.

So we are not prosecuting anybody tonight. We are just going to put something on the shelf.

You have been handed a template you never had, and I am not being poetic; Scripture wrote out God's own promise in Jeremiah 32:38-40 in full so that a man could read it and copy the shape, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old paragraph in a courtyard feel like it was addressed to a front step.

What the shape actually looks like

Here is what surprises men when they finally see one up close. A kept promise is not impressive.

It is small. It is flat. It has a time in it. Thursday, two o'clock, I'll be there. Nothing in front of it, nothing after it, no warmth added to make it sound better, because warmth added to a sentence is very often the thing that is there instead of arriving.

And then the man arrives. And nobody applauds, and the child does not say anything about it, and it looks from the outside like absolutely nothing happened.

That is the whole shape. Say a plain thing. Turn up. Say nothing about having turned up.

Which means the new line in your family does not begin with a big vow on a front step, and thank God for that, because a big vow is just a mood with more words in it. It begins with the smallest true sentence you are certain of. Not the most impressive one. The smallest one that has no exit in it.

You are free to start small, and that is not a lowering of the bar; what is written shows God starting His own covenant with one man and a field in a doomed city, and the Spirit who carried that through the fall of two empires is not going to sniff at a Thursday afternoon in a school hall.

The breakthrough

So here is what has changed on that step, and it is not that you have suddenly become a man who keeps promises.

What has changed is that the shelf is not empty any more. You have watched one kept. You watched it in a courtyard with an army outside, from a God who put both ends of it in His own hands and then went and did it, and that is the first time in your life the shape has been in front of you where you can see it properly. Jeremiah 32:40 is where it stands written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who set it in front of a man on a step rather than leaving him to guess at it.

And you are not the end of anything or the fixer of anything, and I am not going to load that onto you. You are simply the one standing in it now. That is the whole job and it is enough. The covenant was not waiting for a man with a better father to come along, and it has been standing over you since long before that low wall at the end of the drive.

Your son is not going to remember a speech. He is going to remember a hall at two o'clock on a Thursday and his dad in the third row.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your feet, in your own name. The right to talk like this was not earned by a good upbringing and it is not lost for want of one; you are in Christ, and this standing was given to you, and His Spirit is the seal on it, so what follows is a man reading out what God signed and not a man making a vow he hopes to survive. Scripture is the deed in the jar. So speak to the wording you have been hiding behind, then to the thing you have believed about yourself since the low wall, then to God, and whatever He does with the years ahead is His to decide, in His own way and in His timing.

  1. Words with an exit built into them, you are done running my mouth. Jeremiah 32:40 has God saying He does not turn away, said plainly with nowhere to go, and I am copying His sentence instead of my cupboard of them, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Voice that says I have nothing to copy, get off this step. What is written put God's own promise in full where a man could read it, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old courtyard sound like my driveway, so I have a template now and I am using it on Thursday.
  3. Father, You hold Your end and You hold mine, and You said so out loud with an army at the wall. I am the one standing in this now, and it is standing for my son. Your Holy Spirit is what keeps my feet there at ten to two, and I am not saying anything about it afterwards.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
