Two Things KeptPsalm 105:8

The Loaf I Never Counted

This message is for the baker locking up on a Thursday who can quote a promise to every customer and cannot name one thing God has done in his own house

The shutter is halfway down and the light coming in under it is the color of the crust on the last loaf in the basket.

Sami sweeps. There is flour on these boards that will be back by six tomorrow morning, and he sweeps it anyway, the way his father did, in long strokes toward the door.

It has been a good Thursday. The widow from the corner came at eleven for her two small loaves and he put in a third and would not hear a word about it, and when she said what she says every week, that she does not know how the month will close, he told her what he always tells her. God is your keeper. He does not sleep. She went out holding the bag against her chest with both arms.

At one, the young man who has been three months without work leaned on the counter and bought nothing and did not need to, and Sami gave him bread and honey and told him that God has not forgotten him and never once has, and said the verse over him, and the young man left the shop lighter than he came into it.

At four, the woman whose boy is in the hospital in the city stood in the doorway and could not make herself come in, so Sami went round the counter and out into the street in his apron and said the promise over her there, with the traffic going past and his hands still white to the wrist.

People on that street will tell you. If you want bread, go to Sami. If you want a promise, also go to Sami.

Now it is nearly seven. His son is at the back table with his schoolbooks, the table with the permanent gray dust of flour worked into the grain of the wood, and he has a page to fill in for school. Family history. Where the family came from, what the grandparents did, and a line at the bottom that says: one story your family tells.

Baba, the boy says, not looking up. What has God done for us?

It is not a test. It is a homework question, asked the way a boy asks how to spell a word.

Sami stands there with the broom in his hand.

He opens his mouth, and what comes out is that God has been very good to this family, and he hears it land on the table like an empty sack. It is true. It is completely true. It is also nothing a boy can write on a line.

So he tries again, and this time he goes looking, back through the years, for one thing with a shape to it. A night. A month. A thing that happened. And the years hand him bread, and customers, and the shop, and not one page he can point his finger at.

Ten minutes later he pulls the shutter the rest of the way down, puts his palm flat against the cold of it, and says out loud in an empty shop the sentence he has never said to another living person.

I have a promise ready for every house on this street, and I cannot name one thing He did in mine.

The Loaf I Never Counted

Psalm 105 is a baker's ledger

I want to take you to a psalm that does exactly what Sami could not do at the back table, and it does it in public, out loud, in front of the whole assembly.

Psalm 105 opens by telling the people to make known His deeds, to talk of all His wondrous works, to remember. And then, instead of leaving that as a fine sentiment, the psalm rolls its sleeves up and does the work itself. It is a long, specific, unembarrassed list of things that actually happened, with the names in it and the order kept.

But look at what it puts at the top of that list, before a single event is named.

He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.Psalm 105:8

One oath at the head, and then the record underneath it. That is the shape of the whole psalm and it is the shape of this site. The oath is what God swore. The record is what God did. And the psalmist puts them on the same page because neither one carries a weary man on its own.

Now hear this as said over you rather than explained to you. You are inside that same covenant tonight, standing in it, not queuing for it, and it did not open to you because your record keeping is better than Sami's. Scripture says He remembered it for ever, to a thousand generations, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing that word into you as you read it instead of leaving it as an old man's poetry.

He is the one doing the remembering

Read the verse again slowly, because the grammar is the mercy in it.

He has remembered. Not you. The subject of that sentence is God, and it has been God the whole way down, in every generation the psalm names, and it was God on all the mornings you cannot account for.

This matters more than it looks, because a man like Sami will assume the keeping was his job and that he has been failing at it. He has not. The covenant has been kept for ever by the One who swore it, and no amount of forgetting on his side reaches it. It is not broken. It is not thinning out. It is not waiting on him to catch up. It has been going on above his head for years while he swept the same floor.

What he has lost is not the covenant. It is his grip on it. A grip is a small thing to repair compared to an oath, which is why this is a much better evening than he thinks it is.

You have been carrying a promise for everybody else and holding nothing in your own hands, and that gap is a matter of counting rather than a matter of standing. Scripture settles the standing and the Spirit is the seal on it, Paul says, the down payment God put inside you so the oath would have a witness in a person and not only in a book.

The bread came in and nobody entered it

Here is the part I would say to Sami if I were leaning on his counter while he swept.

You have not been living a life with nothing in it. You have been running a shop with no ledger, and Scripture is the ledger God kept for His own people, and His Spirit is the one who carries an entry back across the years to the man who stopped looking for it.

Psalm 105 lists the plain things without apologizing for them. He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light in the night. He opened the rock and the waters gushed out. And down at verse 40, in the middle of that long record: He satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

Bread. Small, daily, unremarkable, and entered in the record of the nation for three thousand years because somebody thought to write it down.

So when you go looking for what God has done in your house, do not go looking only for the headline. The month the rent was made up and you never worked out how. The friend who rang the week you had told nobody. The scan. The neighbor with the part in his garage. The three months the young man was out of work, and the fact that you had bread to give him at all. You have been handing out loaves you never counted as anything, and the counting is where this turns around, not the receiving. Scripture says God satisfied them with bread and expected it in the record, and His Spirit brings things back to remembrance, which is precisely what Jesus said He would come and do.

The breakthrough

Nothing has to be manufactured tonight. Both things already exist, and this is the whole turn of the evening: the oath was sworn before you were born and the loaf came in through your own door.

You are not being asked to produce a testimony. You are being handed a page and told to write down what is already there, and the word underneath it is God's, and the Spirit who inspired that word is the one lifting your own morning back into the light where you can see it. The general answer that landed on the table like an empty sack was not a lie. It was a summary of things you never itemized.

So itemize one. Just one. The shop can wait ten minutes.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the page in front of you. The right to talk like this was not earned by a good week: you are in Christ, every promise of God is yes in Him, and the Spirit inside you is the seal on it, so this standing was given to you rather than built by you. Scripture holds the oath and your own memory holds the loaf, and both of them are His. Speak first to the general answer, then to the sense that God works in other people's houses, then to God Himself, and whatever He does with the year in front of you is His to decide.

  1. General answer, you have fed everyone on this street and never once fed my own table. Psalm 105:8 goes on the left of my page and the night I can name goes on the right, and God kept bread in the record beside His own oath so nobody could call His doing vague.
  2. Sense that this is for other houses, get out of mine in the name of Jesus. Scripture says He remembered His covenant for ever, to a thousand generations, and this house stands inside that number, and His Spirit is lifting the year back up out of the flour dust while I stand here.
  3. Father, You did the remembering for ever and I lost my grip on it by Thursday, and the loaf still came through my door. I am writing the date tonight with the shutter down, and Your Holy Spirit is what steadies my hand when the season starts arguing with the page.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
