Two Things KeptNumbers 17:10

The Rod That Was Kept, Not Carried

This message is for the worship leader who has sung the promises over a room for six years and has no page of her own

The hall at half past eight on a Thursday smells of the coffee somebody made at seven and nobody drank.

She has led here for six years. Six years of Thursdays, and she knows the room the way you know a kitchen in the dark: the corner where the vocal mic buzzes if you turn past two o'clock, the radiator that ticks in the second verse, the stack of blue chairs that has been eleven high since before she came. The new bass player is nineteen and keeps apologizing. Somebody's daughter is asleep across three chairs at the back with headphones on.

They run the third song again because the harmony is landing flat on the turnaround, and she sings the top line herself so the two girls can hear where it sits. It is a line about God never leaving, never forsaking. She has sung it perhaps four hundred times. She sings it now the way a bricklayer lays a brick, cleanly, without ceremony, and the harmony fixes itself, and they move on.

At twenty to ten they are packing down. Cables in the black case, the lid that only shuts if you press the left corner first. Bev from the prayer team is folding chairs at the far end, and Bev is seventy-four and has never once asked anybody how they are.

What she asks, across the top of a folded chair, is this: "What are you standing on at the minute, love?"

And the answer comes out smooth, because it is a good answer and she has given it before. That God is faithful. That He has been so faithful, really, through everything.

Bev nods slowly, in the way of a woman who has heard a great many good answers.

"No," she says. "What verse. What day."

The hall goes on being a hall. The bass player is winding a cable badly. And the worship leader stands there with a chair in her hands and finds that she has nothing to say, and it is not because she does not believe. She believes more than most people in the building. She has spent six years holding promises out over this room the way you hold a lamp out over a stairwell so other people can see their feet.

In the car she opens her phone, because there must be something. Set lists. Keys. Tempos. A note that says Fri 7pm, arrive 6.15, bring the long XLR. Six years of scrolling, and not one page that is hers. Not one verse she could put her hand on and say, this one, He said this one to me. Not one date she could point at and say, that Tuesday, that was Him and I know it was.

She has carried the promises of God for six years, professionally, week in and week out.

She has not kept a single one.

The Rod That Was Kept, Not Carried

God ordered it put back

There is a moment in Numbers where the whole camp is arguing about who has the right to stand up front, and God settles it in a way nobody would have designed. Twelve staffs. One from each tribe, each with a man's name written on it. Put them in the tent overnight, in front of the testimony, and leave them there.

By morning one of them is not a stick any more. Aaron's has budded. Not budded only: it has blossomed, and it has put out ripe almonds, on a cut branch, in a dark tent, overnight.

Now watch what God does with it, because this is the part nobody preaches.

And the Lord said unto Moses, Bring Aaron's rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token.Numbers 17:10

He does not tell Aaron to carry it. He does not say take that thing out to the edge of the camp every morning and hold it up and remind them. He says put it back, and keep it.

Hear this over you and not merely about a rod. You have a keeping place, and it was not your idea and it does not depend on your memory. Numbers 17:10 says the rod went back before the testimony to be kept, and the Holy Spirit is the One holding your evidence in the same way while you are busy holding out somebody else's.

Carrying is not keeping

Carrying is a good and holy thing and I will not say a word against it. Every Thursday somebody picks up the promises of God and holds them out over a room full of people who cannot lift them just then, and that is ministry, and Heaven notices it.

But carrying is not keeping, and a thing that is only ever carried goes dry.

A rod waved over a crowd for six years splits at the grain. The almonds come off. The green goes out of it and it becomes a stick with a story attached, and then it becomes just a stick, and then somebody uses it to prop a door. Whereas the rod that went back before the testimony is still, in the book of Hebrews, being listed among the things inside the ark, generations later, budded and blossomed and holding its almonds.

So this is for the one whose hands are full of everybody's promises. Right now, as you read, you are not outside the thing you have been singing over other people, and you never were. His word does not have a staff-only tier. The Spirit who has been carrying those lines out of your mouth and into that room has also been keeping something for you, and tonight you are going to go and look at it.

The rod carried both halves

Look at what was actually kept, though, because it is the whole point of this site in one object.

The rod was the record of a promise: God had said the man I choose, his rod shall bud. That is the word, spoken before anything happened, not open to revision, not contingent on Aaron's performance that week or any week. And the rod was also the record of an event: almonds. Actual almonds, on an actual morning, in front of actual witnesses who could count them.

One object, two things kept. What He swore, and what He did. And He did not ask anybody to hold it up in the air to keep it valid.

Your card, tonight, is a page with two lines on it. That is all. And you have permission for it that you never gave yourself, because Scripture spends whole chapters on people writing down dates and naming places, and the Spirit of God does not think your Tuesday is too small to write down.

The breakthrough

Nothing has to be generated tonight. That is the turn, and it is worth stopping on.

You are not short of a promise and you are not short of a morning. You have both already, and the only thing missing is a page. God swore the thing before the rod ever budded, and the almonds came whether or not anybody was taking notes, and the Spirit whom Jesus called the One who brings all things to remembrance has not lost a single one of your mornings. What is written stands over you tonight, and it stood over you through all six of those years when you thought you were only staff.

And when the hard season comes and starts making its case, and it will make a good one, you are not going to answer it with a warm general sentence about faithfulness. You are going to open the page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the page in front of you. Your standing to speak like this was not earned at a rehearsal: Christ is in you, and every promise of God is yes in Him, and the seal on that is His Holy Spirit, and that has been given to you and it is the whole floor you are on. Scripture is the word that was sworn and your dated morning is the almond on the branch, and both of them are His. So speak to the empty folder, then to the thing it has been telling you about yourself, then to God, and whatever He does with the season in front of you is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Set list folder, you are not my record of God. Numbers 17:10 says the rod was put back and kept, so I am keeping mine on one page tonight, a verse on the left and a morning on the right.
  2. Feeling that I am only the hired hands, get out of this car in the name of Jesus. God budded a cut branch overnight for a man who never had to wave it about afterwards, and His Spirit is bringing my own mornings back to me faster than I can write them down.
  3. Lord, You swore it before anybody sang it, and You did it while I was busy with somebody else's harmony. Your Holy Spirit kept what I forgot to keep, and I am writing my two lines tonight and putting them where I will find them again.
