The Letters Keep the Same Address

They mostly come on a Thursday, and she knows which one it is before she has it all the way out of the box.

It is the weight, partly. The shape. The franking mark up in the corner where a stamp would be on anybody else's post. And the handwriting on the front, which is his, and which has not changed one degree since he was fifteen and doing his homework at that same table with the radio on.

She takes it through and puts the kettle on and does not open it yet. She never opens it in the hall.

The letters are good. That is the thing nobody expects her to say. He writes about the kitchen job and how he has got himself onto the bread. There is a man on his landing who plays chess and is teaching him, and he has beaten him twice now and is insufferable about it. He asks after her hip. He tells her not to make the journey if the weather is bad, which she ignores. He signs off the same way every single time, the same three words, and she has never once read them without having to put the page down.

He has been moved twice. Both times she let herself think it. Both times, when the new address came through, it was another one of the same kind, printed the same way, in the same corner of the same envelope.

There is a shoebox on top of the wardrobe with nine years of them in it, in order, held with two elastic bands because one went.

And there is a Bible on the shelf by the window with a folded piece of lined paper in it at the back of Isaiah, and on that paper, in her own hand, is what she believed God said to her about her son on a night nine years ago, with the date written underneath because somebody had the sense to tell her to date it.

She has not taken it out in a long while. She knows what it says.

This morning she does something she has never done. She takes the paper out of the Bible and unfolds it and lays it on the table, and she puts this Thursday's envelope down next to it, squared up, the two of them side by side on the cloth.

Then she stands there with her hands on the back of a chair and looks from one to the other, and she says it out loud to an empty room, in the flat voice of a woman who has run out of ways to hold both.

"One of you is lying."

That is where you are, and I am not going to hurry you off it. You have a promise in one hand and the post in the other, and the post keeps arriving, and it always arrives on time.

Neither piece of paper is lying

Your instinct, standing at that table, is that the envelope is evidence and the paper is a hope. One is a fact and one is a feeling, and facts win, because that is how a sensible woman was raised to think.

Now hear how God speaks about His own word, in a passage He gave to people staring at an empire that had every appearance of having settled the matter.

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. Yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.Isaiah 46:10-11

Look at the order of the tenses, because the whole of your table is in it. He declares the end from the beginning. He speaks about things not yet done in the language of things already settled. That is not optimism and it is not prediction: a prediction is a good guess about what the evidence is trending toward, and an oath is a statement from the far end of the story by the only One who has been there.

So take this before you take anything else off me. You are holding a word that was spoken from the end, and you were never asked to make it agree with Thursday's post. Isaiah 46:10 says His counsel stands, and the Holy Spirit who bore witness with your spirit on the night you wrote that paper is the same One steadying your hands over it now, nine years on, in a quiet front room.

What an address can do, and what it cannot

I want to be very plain about the envelope, because there are people who would take it off the table and explain it to you, and I am not going to do that.

I do not know why the address is what it is. I will not offer you a reason for it dressed up as revelation, and I will not hand you a purpose for your son's years, because I have not been told one and a guess in God's voice is a cruel gift to give a mother. The envelope stays exactly where it is, and it is heavy, and it is real.

Here is the only thing I am taking off it. An address tells you where a person is today. That is its whole competence. It is not qualified to tell you where the story ends, it has never been asked its opinion on the counsel of God, and for nine years a franking mark has been handing down a verdict it has no authority to give.

He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God.Romans 4:20

And read the verse before it, because it is the kindest thing in the chapter: Abraham looked straight at a hundred year old body and a dead womb and did not look away. He was never required to unsee the evidence. Nobody has ever asked you to pretend the envelope is not on the table.

You are inside a covenant that does not run on your ability to reconcile two pieces of paper, and you were inside it on every Thursday of those nine years. Scripture says God has spoken it and He also does it, in Isaiah 46:11, and His Spirit carries the whole weight of the bringing to pass, which is exactly why the weight has never been on your ears or on your reading of that night.
