His Word StandsIsaiah 40:8

Colder Every Week

This message is for the girl praying a promise over a friendship that has gone colder every week for five months

It did not have an argument in it, which is the part she cannot get past.

If there had been an argument she would know what to do with it. There would be a Saturday, and a sentence, and something to be sorry for or something to forgive, and a shape. There is no shape. There is a graph, if you drew one, going gently and steadily down for five months.

She has the receipts, because everybody has the receipts now. In March the replies were paragraphs. Actual paragraphs, sent at one in the morning, the kind you write to somebody you are still thinking with. By April they were sentences. By May they were a sentence and an emoji, then just the emoji, then the small gray thumb that means received and closed.

There was a coffee arranged twice. Moved once for a genuine reason. Moved again for a reason that was probably genuine. Never rearranged after that, and neither of them has mentioned it since, which is a kind of agreement.

She is still in the group chat. She sees the photographs from things she was not at. Nobody excluded her from anything, exactly. She was simply not in the part of the conversation where it got decided.

And here is what she has actually been doing with her evenings, which she would be embarrassed for anybody to know. She scrolls back. She goes into March and reads forward, slowly, looking for the sentence where it turned. She is looking for the thing she said. She has read that whole spring four or five times now and there is no sentence. There is only a temperature dropping.

In the front of her Bible, in her own handwriting, there is a verse she wrote in March, before any of this, on a good week. She has been praying it over this friendship since the second month. Every night for a while, then most nights, then in a shorter and shorter form until it became one word and a name.

She has not stopped praying it. That is not the problem.

The problem is that the thread and the verse are both in her hands, and every week the thread gets colder, and something in her has started quietly treating the thread as the more reliable of the two.

Colder Every Week

The prophet said the withering out loud first

Isaiah 40 opens with comfort, and everybody quotes the comfort. Then there is a strange, honest exchange in the middle of it that almost nobody quotes, and it is the one you need.

A voice says cry. And the prophet says, effectively, cry what? Look at it. All flesh is grass, and every bit of its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades.

Read what God does not do next. He does not say no it isn't. He does not correct the man. He does not explain why the grass is withering or hand him a reason that would make the fading feel better. He lets the whole sentence stand, and then He puts one more clause on the end of it.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.Isaiah 40:8

Both halves are true at once and neither one cancels the other. That is not a consolation trick; it is the actual structure of the verse. The withering is real. The word is standing. Nobody in that passage is asked to pretend about the first thing in order to hold the second.

So take this as said over you and not filed away. You have permission to say out loud that it has gone cold, without that admission costing you anything at all, because the thing that stands in Isaiah 40:8 is not your reading of the weather, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for you to be more positive before He will hold the word steady in you.

What I am not going to tell you

I am not going to tell you what happens to this friendship. Neither should anybody else, and if somebody does, they are telling you something they do not know.

I am not going to explain the five months to you either. I do not know why it cooled, you do not know why it cooled, and the versions where it means something about your character are guesses wearing confident clothing. This site does not assign a purpose to a hard thing and then hand you the purpose as though it were comfort.

What I am going to do is take one job off you, and it is a heavier one than you realize you have been carrying. You have been appointed, by nobody, as the interpreter of a cooling thread. Every shortened reply has had to be read, weighed and turned into a finding about God. That was never your work. Scripture puts the standing thing outside the field entirely, and the Spirit of God inside you is the One holding it there so that the temperature of a chat does not get a vote on what God said.

And one more thing, plainly, because it matters more than it looks. You do not get to speak over her. Not her will, not her heart, not her diary. Bless her, freely, and mean it. The authority you have been given is over your own fear and your own forecasting, and honestly, you would not want a God who could be used the other way.

Two things in the same hand

Here is the practice, and it is small enough to actually do.

Name the contradiction out loud first. Not in a spiritual voice. The way you would say it to somebody in a car: she has not answered properly since May, and I do not know why, and it hurts.

Then say the promise out loud after it. In that order and not the reverse, because reversing it is what makes people sound as though they are managing their own feelings with a verse, and everybody can hear it, including you.

Said in that order, the promise is not a lid on the cold. It is the thing that turns out to still be there after you have told the truth about the cold. You are holding both right now and neither one is displacing the other, because the word that Isaiah says stands forever is not fragile enough to need protecting from your honesty, and His Spirit is the One who makes the second sentence sound like more than a coping line.

The breakthrough

Notice what has moved and what has not. The thread has not moved. The last message is still the last message and the coffee is still unrearranged, and nothing on this page has touched any of that.

What has moved is the instrument. You walked in reading God off a graph, and there is nothing wrong with you for doing it, because a cooling thing in front of your eyes is loud and a written sentence is quiet, and it takes an act of God to hear the quiet one over the loud one. That act has been going on in you the entire time you have been reading.

You are standing on something that does not fade, and it was standing before March and it has not thinned by one degree since May. Isaiah 40:8 is where it is written, the Holy Spirit is the One making it audible over the noise, and the locked door in front of you is not the verdict it has been posing as.

Declare this over yourself

Say these somewhere you can be honest. You are not speaking them because you have managed to feel better. Christ is in you, and this standing is yours by what He did and not by how well the last five months went. Whatever God does with this friendship is His to decide, in His own way, and no line below is a forecast. Speak first to the five months themselves, then to what they have been telling you about who you are, then to God. Bless your friend, and leave her free.

  1. Five months of shorter replies, you are not the verdict on anything God has spoken. Isaiah 40:8 says the flower fades and the word of our God stands forever, and the Holy Spirit is holding that word steady over this table whatever you do next.
  2. Idea that people quietly tire of me, get out in the name of Jesus. God has never once read His mind about me off a group chat, His word is what stands and it says so, and His Spirit is the One who unclenches my hands while the chair stays empty.
  3. Jesus, You are the Word that does not wither and I am holding You and the cold in the same two hands tonight. I am saying the true thing out loud first and Your promise second, and Your Holy Spirit is what makes the second one land heavier than the first.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
