What He SworePsalm 89:34-35

When the Band Goes Quiet

This message is for the woman who only believes she is held when the music is right and the room is full

The Friday night is the best night of her year and she knows it while it is happening, which is rare.

Nine hundred people in a leisure center with the badminton lines still painted on the floor. She has driven two hours with her sister and a bag of crisps that neither of them opened. And when the last song comes, it goes on for about eight minutes, and somewhere in the middle of it the room stops being nine hundred people and becomes one thing, and she is crying in a way she has not cried in four years, and she is absolutely certain.

That is the word she uses in the car afterwards. Certain. Her sister is driving and eating the crisps at last, and she says it twice: I have never been so certain in my life.

Saturday is good. Sunday is quieter but fine.

Monday the car will not start, and there is a letter from the school about her son, and a thing at work that she cannot fix by Thursday.

Tuesday afternoon at ten past four she is standing in her kitchen waiting for the kettle. The house is empty. There is a bin lorry reversing somewhere. And she takes out her phone and finds the song, the eight minute one, and plays it through the phone speaker on the worktop, and it sounds like a wasp in a biscuit tin, and she stands there with both hands on the counter and waits for it.

Nothing comes.

She turns the volume up. Still nothing. She closes her eyes and tries to put herself back in the leisure center, and she can see it perfectly, and it does not do anything at all.

Her son comes in from the garden and asks if she is sad, and she says no, love, and puts the kettle on properly.

But here is the thing she thinks while she is getting a cup down, and she thinks it in the flat voice people use for the things they actually believe: it was the room. It was the lights and the nine hundred people and the eight minutes and the bass in her chest. It was never Him. And on a Tuesday, in a kitchen, with a bin lorry going, there is nothing there.

She has spent four years checking whether God is with her the way you check whether it is raining. She looks out of the window. She reads the sky. And a woman with a barometer will always tell you, honestly and with real grief, that the weather has turned.

When the Band Goes Quiet

The man who wrote both halves

There is a psalm that does the exact thing your Tuesday did, and it does it out loud, and God put it in the book on purpose.

Psalm 89 starts enormous. It sings about mercy built up for ever, about faithfulness established in the heavens, about a God who cut a covenant with David and swore to hold his line. And right in the middle of it comes the line I want in your hands tonight.

My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.Psalm 89:34-35

Then keep reading. Because a few verses later the same psalm, the same writer, the same ink, says that God has cast off, that He has made the glory to cease, that He has cast the throne down to the ground. The man is standing in a wrecked palace looking at a crown in the dirt, and he does not pretend otherwise, and he is not rebuked for it.

Both are in there. The oath and the ruins. On the same page, in the same voice, on the same afternoon.

That is your kitchen, and it is not a failure of faith. Right now, as you read, you are held by something that was never being carried by the eight minutes in that leisure center. Psalm 89:34 is the written word and it did not go quiet when the speaker did, and the Holy Spirit is the One pressing it into you at the worktop with the bin lorry still going.

Once

Look at that word. Once have I sworn.

Not weekly. Not whenever the room is full. Not again, more strongly, because the last one went flat. Once.

A mood has to be renewed constantly or it dies, which is why a person who lives on moods lives on a treadmill. An oath is sworn one time and it stands, and it stands most obviously on the days when nobody feels it, because that is the only kind of day that tests whether it was an oath in the first place.

And notice what God swears by. By my holiness. There is nothing above Him to put His hand on, so He puts His hand on Himself, and that is what makes the thing unbreakable: it does not rest on David's consistency, and it does not rest on yours, and it never did. Read Psalm 89 for the terms you are supposed to meet and you will read it all night and not find them. There is no if in the oath. That is not an oversight.

So hear it as spoken over you and not merely explained. You have not been downgraded since Friday. What went out of God's lips is not open to revision, and His Spirit is not a visitor who comes when the production is good; He was given to live in you, and He is as much in a kitchen at ten past four as in a leisure center at half past nine.

The barometer and the ring

Here is the swap I want you to make, and it is a small one.

The weather has been the way of finding out whether the marriage holds. And it has been done sincerely: nobody checks the sky that carefully unless they badly want to know.

But the ring does not come off when it rains. The oath is not a report on the atmosphere in a room. It is a thing God said out loud, once, about Himself, and He has not amended it since, and there is no version of the story where He wakes up on a Tuesday and thinks better of it.

This is what makes the difference between a good night and a covenant, and I would rather you had one good night and knew what it was than nine hundred and not know. The night was real. Heaven was in it. But the night was the evidence, and the oath is the thing itself, and evidence goes home at eleven and the oath does not go anywhere.

You are inside something you did not talk yourself into and cannot feel your way out of. It is written that He will not alter it, and the Spirit of God is the seal on it, which is Paul's own word for what is going on inside you, and a seal is not a mood.

The breakthrough

Nothing needs to be recovered tonight. That is the turn.

You did not lose it in the kitchen, because it was never a thing that could be kept in a kitchen or lost in one. God said it once, He said it by His holiness, and He has never once been asked to say it again. His word stands over you at four in the afternoon in a house with nobody in it, and the Spirit who was given to you is not somewhere else waiting for a better room.

So the music can come back or not come back. That is not the load-bearing wall. You are held by an oath, and an oath does not go quiet when the band does.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are. Your standing to speak like this is not the Friday night: Christ is in you, and every promise of God is yes in Him, and His Holy Spirit is the seal on it, and that has been given to you and it is the only floor anybody stands on. Scripture holds the oath and the ruins on the same page and does not flinch at either. So speak to the flat afternoon, then to the thing it has been telling you about yourself, then to God, and whatever He does with the season in front of you is His to decide, in His own way.

  1. Flat Tuesday afternoon, you are not the weather report on my God. Scripture says He does not alter the thing that has gone out of His lips, in Psalm 89:34, and He sent His Spirit to live in a kitchen this quiet.
  2. Idea that He likes me best in a full room, get out in the name of Jesus. God swore once by His own holiness and has never been asked to say it again, and His Spirit is in this house at ten past four with the bin lorry going.
  3. Lord, You said it once and it is written that You do not alter it. Your Holy Spirit is the seal on what You swore, and I am saying it back to You out loud in the quiet with nothing playing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
