There is a particular spot on the floor, just outside the sitting room, where the tiles change from the rough ones to the smooth ones, and Nadim learned to stand on it without making a sound before he was seven years old.
From there you could see most of what you needed. The shoes by the door: lined up meant one kind of evening, kicked apart meant another. The tea glass on the low table: full and steaming meant his father had only just sat down and would want ten minutes; empty with the leaves dried in the bottom meant he had been sitting a long time and had been thinking. The radio on or off. And most of all the shoulders, because his father's shoulders told you everything before his face did.
His father was not a cruel man. Nobody in that house would have said so and it would not have been true. He worked long shifts and came home tired in a way children cannot understand, and he was generous when he had anything to be generous with, and he laughed properly when he laughed. But he had weather. Some evenings you could ask him for anything, a trip, a bicycle, permission to stay out, money for a school thing, and he would wave his hand and it was done. Other evenings the same question got a long silence and then a short answer, and you learned very fast not to make it worse.
So Nadim became the reader. He was the best in the house at it, better than his mother, and his sisters knew it. They used to send him in first. He would stand on the join in the tiles for maybe four seconds, come back down the corridor, and say either go now or leave it till tomorrow, and he was right nearly every time. It was a skill. In that house it was a genuinely useful skill and it kept a lot of small peace.
He is forty-one now. His father has been gone six years and Nadim misses him, plainly and without complication, and keeps his old watch in a drawer.
And he still stands on the join in the tiles. He just does it before he prays.
He reads the week the way he used to read the shoulders. A good stretch, work steady, the family well, and he will ask for something large, because the weather looks like it will carry it. A hard stretch, the wrong kind of phone call, something he did on Tuesday that he is not proud of, and he does not ask for anything at all. He says the short prayers, the safe ones, the ones you say when you are hoping not to be noticed. Come back tomorrow. Leave it till the room is better.
He has never once, in his whole life, simply walked in.
He found this out on a Thursday, standing at the door of his own study, when his daughter came down the corridor and stopped, four feet away, and looked at his face for a second and a half before she asked him whether she could have a friend to stay.
He saw the whole thing from the other side, all at once, and it went through him like cold water.
She was reading him. She was checking the weather of a man who would have given her the roof, and she was doing it well, and she had learned it somewhere.

An oath is a thing you can read in the dark
There is a reason God did not only promise. There is a reason He swore.
On a mountain in Moriah, over a man who had just come through the worst three days of his life, God said something He had not said in that form before.
By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.Genesis 22:16-18
By myself have I sworn. Hold that clause and let the rest go for a minute, because that clause is the whole architecture.
When two people make an oath, each one swears by something higher than himself, and the higher thing is what holds them to it. Hebrews says it plainly: men swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all argument. But when God swore, there was nobody higher available. So He put His own name and His own nature behind it, which means the one who promises and the one who guarantees are the same person, and there is no second party in the room whose performance could put it at risk.
That is what you are standing inside tonight, and you were standing inside it on the Thursdays you did not ask for anything. Scripture says it is impossible for God to lie, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that impossibility across to a man who has spent forty years reading rooms.
Why He added the oath at all
Here is the tender part, and it is the part that undoes a reader.
God did not need the oath. His word was already His word and it was already unbreakable. The oath added nothing to His reliability. Hebrews tells you exactly who it was added for: God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation.
Read the reason again. Willing more abundantly to show. He knew what kind of people He was dealing with. He knew there would be a boy on the join in the tiles who would grow up into a man on the join in the tiles, and He did the extra thing, unasked, so that there would be something in the room that does not have a face to read.
You have something in your hands that was put there specifically because God knew you would be checking the weather. That is not me being poetic. That is the stated purpose in the written text, and His Spirit is the one who makes it land as kindness rather than as information.
The oath does not have a mood
And now the plain thing, which I will say once and not soften.
A mood can be read. An oath cannot be read, it can only be known, and that difference is the whole of this category.
You cannot look at the sky and work out what God swore. You cannot look at your bank, your body, your week, or the thing you did on Tuesday, and derive from any of it whether the oath still stands. There is exactly one place the oath is available, and it is written down, and it says the same words on your worst Thursday as it says on your best morning, because a sworn word is not a barometer and has no relationship at all to the pressure in the room.
And nothing in it is on terms. Look at what God swears to do: bless, multiply, give, and bless all the nations of the earth through the seed. Every verb in that oath has God as its subject. Not one of them is waiting on a man to hold up an end. Abraham had walked up that mountain, and God spoke over him afterward, and the swearing was still by Himself and not by Abraham, because if any part of it had rested on Abraham it would have gone into the ground with him.
You are inside a promise whose every verb belongs to God, and it was sworn by Him and written down for you, and the Spirit who inspired that written oath is the one making it real in your chest rather than merely true in a book.
So put the reading down. Not the discernment, that is a good gift and it kept a lot of peace in a hard house. Put down the practice of running it on God.
You have been treating an oath like a face, and the moment the oath is what you look at, the whole approach changes: you walk in. Not carefully, not on a good day, not after a clean week. The written word says God swore by Himself so that the heirs would have strong consolation, and His Spirit is the one who takes that consolation off the page and puts it in a man's legs so he can actually cross the tiles.
Your daughter should see a father who gets up.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud standing up, not sitting. The right to speak like this is not something a clean week earned: you are in Christ, and every promise of God is yes in Him, and the Spirit inside you is the seal on it, so this standing was given to you rather than read off anybody's face. Scripture holds the oath and the oath was sworn by God on Himself. So speak first to the doorway, then to the habit that has been running on Him, then to God Himself, and whatever He does with the thing you are about to ask for is His to decide.
- Doorway, I have stood in you half my life reading a face before I asked for anything, and I am walking through. Genesis 22:16 says God swore by Himself because there was nobody higher to swear by, so there is no weather in this house that amends one word of it.
- Habit of reading His face first, go in the name of Jesus. I am a son who walks straight in, because Scripture says it is impossible for God to lie and the two unchangeable things were put there on purpose for people like me, and His Spirit keeps that in front of me when my own week starts talking.
- Father, You swore by Yourself and there was no one higher, and You have never once needed me to catch You in a good hour. I am reading Your oath out loud tonight and saying the word sworn after it, and Your Holy Spirit is what makes it land in a man who spent forty years standing on the join in the tiles.
