The Brother Who Never Left

This message is for the man who was never a prodigal and has quietly decided that counts against him

He is the one with the keys. He has been the one with the keys since before the current minister was ordained.

He unlocks the hall at half five, gets the water heater going because it takes forty minutes and always has, puts out the tables in the arrangement everyone else thinks happens by itself, and drives the van round to collect the four people who cannot get there otherwise. He has done that on the third Thursday of the month for thirty-one years. He does not resent one minute of it and would be genuinely puzzled if you suggested he might.

The evening itself is a good evening. People stand up and say what God has done, and they mean it, and some of it takes the roof off.

There was a man that night, younger, maybe forty, who told the room about a night in a cell and a morning after it. He told it plainly and he was not performing. He said the sentence that goes round a room like a dropped glass: I was finished, and He came and got me.

And afterwards, at the hatch, doing the washing up because the rota does not cover the third Thursday, our man stood with his hands in the water and heard himself think it.

I wish I had a story like that.

Not: I am glad for him. He was glad for him. It was underneath the gladness, and it was not a thought so much as a settling, and what it was, when he looked straight at it, was this: he envied that man his wreckage.

He was raised in it. Believed at seven, in a Sunday school room with a paraffin heater, and never had a reason to stop. Married in the same building. Buried his parents out of it. Has never smoked, never gambled, never left, never had a night in a cell or a morning after one.

And somewhere across those years he has quietly arrived at a verdict on himself. Not a loud one. He would deny it if you put it to him straight.

The verdict is that he is here by residence rather than by rescue. That the people with the stories are in because something was done for them, and he is in because he never went anywhere, which is not the same thing and everybody knows it. That when the roll is read out he will be somewhere at the bottom, under a subheading, listed as staff.

He put the last tray in the rack and dried his hands and went out to lock up, and the thought went with him to the van.

You have dried your hands on that towel.

The Brother Who Never Left

The father came out of the house twice

Everybody knows how that parable starts. Fewer people notice that it happens twice.

The younger son comes up the road and the father sees him a long way off and runs. That is the scene on the wall of every Sunday school in the country. But the story does not end there. It ends outside, in the dark, at the edge of a party, with the older son refusing to go in, and this line:

And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.Luke 15:31

Before that sentence there is a detail that carries the whole weight. Luke says the father came out and entreated him. Came out. He left his own celebration and went out into the yard after the son who had never gone anywhere, exactly as he had gone out down the road after the one who had.

Two sons. One house. The father outside with both of them.

And look at the tense of what he says. Not you will be, not one of these days. Thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. Present, continuous, already handed over, and no event required to trigger it. The younger son's inheritance had to be restored to him. The elder son's was never interrupted.

So take this as spoken over you, standing at that hatch. You are inside every word of that sentence at this hour, and Luke 15:31 says all that I have is thine with no crisis attached as the price of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old line like that land on a man with a tea towel in his hand.

Thirty-one years is not a short story

Here is where the accounting has gone wrong, and it is an accounting error and not a sin.

A dramatic account is short. That is its nature. It is a night, a morning, a door, a moment on a bridge, and it can be told in ninety seconds because that is genuinely how long the decisive part took. It is not less than a long one. It is a different shape.

Yours is long. Thirty-one third Thursdays a year, a water heater that takes forty minutes, four people in a van who would otherwise be sitting at home, a wife married in that building, two funerals carried out of it, and a boy of seven in a room with a paraffin heater who believed and never found a reason to stop. That is not a testimony with nothing in it. That is a testimony that has never once been read aloud, which is a completely different problem and the one this page is about.

And I am going to be honest with you about something, because a cheaper writer would be tempted here and you would smell it.

I am not going to tell you your dramatic story is coming. I do not know that, nobody does, and it may be that nothing you would stand up and tell a room ever happens to you. That would change absolutely nothing about the sentence in Luke 15:31, because the father did not say it to a man who had just come home. He said it to the one who had not been anywhere.

You were never on probation waiting for an event to confirm you. Scripture has that put beyond argument in the father's own words, and His Spirit is inside you as the seal on a standing that no story was ever required to buy.

The breakthrough

So put the envy down. Not because it was wicked, but because it was arithmetic and the arithmetic was wrong.

You were never in a queue behind the man with the cell story. There is no queue. The father went out of the house for him and the father went out of the house for you, and the second trip is in the same chapter as the first and is recorded with the same care.

You have His word for it, in the plainest sentence in the whole parable, and you have His Spirit in you as God's own guarantee on what that sentence means, and neither of those has ever been contingent on your having a night worth telling a room about.

Now the thing you have to do is not go and get a story. It is to start reading the one that has been running for thirty-one years.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the sink if that is where you are. Your standing to say them is not a night worth telling: in Christ every promise of God is yes, and that was given to you in a Sunday school room and never rescinded. Scripture is the father's own sentence and His Spirit is what makes it audible after everyone has gone home. So speak to the evening, then to the verdict you passed on yourself at that hatch, then to God, and whatever He does with the years ahead is His to decide.

  1. Testimony night in the hall, you are a good evening and you are not the roll of who belongs. Luke 15:31 has the father saying thou art ever with me and all that I have is thine, and His Spirit is landing that on a man with his hands in the water.
  2. Idea that I am here by residence, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. Scripture has the father coming out of his own house to the son who never left, and the Holy Spirit is telling me that all that I have is thine was said to me and not merely near me.
  3. Father, You came out of the house for the son who never went anywhere, and You said all that I have is thine in the present tense with nothing owing on it. I am counting the ordinary out loud from tonight, and no prodigal road was ever the price of what You had already said to me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
